Introduction to ASL
Do you know there are up to 300 different types of sign languages in the world? American Sign Language (ASL) is the predominant sign language in the United States and most of Anglophone Canada. Also, it is widely learned as a second language, serving as a lingua franca. Currently living in India, Amy and Anirban Dasgupta met through ASL. In this video, they will introduce the language structure and share new perspectives towards learning a language. They will break down sign languages–how to visualize signs, how to layer background information into details, how to incorporate facial expressions etc.

Such a lovely video! I had a few sessions with Anirban during the conference and they were so much fun! I’ve always been an introvert and quite shy to try out sign languages, even though I really wanted to learn them for work and for personal development. Through this conference, I finally felt like I had a safe space to do just that, and I learnt a lot more than I thought I would in such a short time. It’s just the beginning of my journey but I know I’ve started strong 🙂
Anirban is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had in any subject. Thank you both so much.
Thank you for the very interesting and informative presentation!
Beautifully done, thank you!
Hi Amy and Anirban! We (at Wikitongues) are working to document more Sign languages, for archiving and sharing. We have around 30 sign languages right now, but do not have a video of ASL.
If one of you would be interested in submitting one, it would be lovely!
This presentation was so informative!! Makes me even more determined to learn this language ❤️
Anirban is leading ASL practice sessions almost everyday in italki Mercury University.
Check the schedule to see when his next session is and join in!
I got on the lesson with Anirban yesterday. It was so much fun!
