Q. How do I register?
Click HERE to access the application form. There is also a link on the form to make payment of 25 Euros. Once registered, you will then be given instructions about making your introductory video.
Q. Which languages can I choose from?
Any language at all that you like. We are giving bonus points to those taking on an indigenous language though! Check out this list for some ideas!.
Q. When can I apply and when does it start and finish?
Applications are open now! There are three challenges, each running for 1 month from 1sth-31st July, 1st-31st August and from 1st-30th September 2019.
Q. What if I only want to do one or two months of study?
You can do 1, 2 or 3 months in a row. You can do 1 month and skip month 2 and re-join in month 3! If you want to be in with a chance of winning, you do need to complete two of the three challenges though!.
Q. What if I want to do different languages each month?
No problem at all! Change languages every month if you like. You can make it a one language across 3 months thing, or treat like a dip into three languages, or do two languages. It’s entirely your choice!.
Q. Do I need to come to the Polyglot Conference to participate?
Not at all, this challenge is open to anyone as all communication will be on facebook and judging will be made based on your own videos.
Q. Do I need to be a beginner?
Ideally yes, but if your level is still basic, then you can still join. We’ll ask you to explain your prior experience with the language on the application form.
Q. How long will the challenge run for?
Each month-long challenge will take place between the first and last days of each month of July, August and September.
Q. How much does it cost?
The cost will be 25 Euros per person per month and that money will go into a prize fund to win Italki vouchers (and possibly other prizes). The more participants we have, the more the prize fund will increase. We will aim to have at least 3 prizes of different values.
Q. What videos will I have to make?
You will have to make a video on or before the start of each month’s challenge: 30th June, 31st July or 31st August! In the video you should aim to introduce yourself and to say which language you will be learning for that month challenge and if you have any experience with that language. This only needs to be 1-2 minutes long. During the challenge, we will make update videos after two weeks and then one month. The final video can be on your own or with a speaker of your chosen language. Full instructions before each deadline will be added to the Facebook group. To be considered for a prize at the end, you must have made two videos each month and have completed two of the three month-long challenges.
Q. When does judging take place?
Judging will take place shortly before the Polyglot Conference in Japan on 19th October. Winners will be announced at the conference but if the winner isn’t there in person, they will still receive their prize afterwards.
Q. How can we talk to other participants of the challenge?
We will have a Facebook group where everyone can interact with each other. Maureen and Richard will act as Admins in the group and will post updates and answer questions. Instructions about making/posting videos will be posted in this facebook group.
